The Brady Bunch and Digital Restoration
Posted: Thursday March 3, 2005
To my wife's delight, the Brady Bunch Season 1 has finally been released on DVD. To put it mildly, she is quite possibly the biggest Brady Bunch fan in the world (I don't want to embarass her too much by going into detail). Needless to say she was ecstatic when I brought home the Brady Bunch Season 1 on DVD the other day when it was released.
It's so cool to see how much cleaner and brighter the picture is now on DVD, as compared to the old TV broadcasts and episodes we have taped on VHS. This was the same reaction I had when watching the original Star Wars Trilogy on DVD. It's just amazing how much better everything looks.
I am fascinated by the film-to-DVD transfer process and how quality is magically being restored, most of the time to a state it has never existed before. I just read this article about the restoration process which explains how during the transfer process the quality can now be even better than a film's original release, due to factors like more precise layering of colors and higher definition scans. Very interesting indeed.
